There’s so much that can go into an outstanding hotel – picking a list of the 100 best in the world takes quite some consideration.

That’s why Travel + Leisure sent 64 reporters to hotels across 44 different countries, in search of the most impressive new openings over recent months. The 100-strong list is split into six categories, with properties ranging from big-name brands to independently-run boutiques. Here are some of our faves.

In the ‘affordable luxury’ category, which features 15 properties all costing US$300 per night or less, Marisma Camps in Chubut Province, Argentina, is a stand-out. Described as ‘the Galapagos of Patagonia’, it sits on a stretch of wild land between the Andes and the Atlantic. Stays here are all-inclusive, and you get two daily excursions included – wildlife-spotting opportunities include Magellanic penguins, sea lions and five types of whale.

In the ‘city hotels’ category is 100 Princes Street, a 30-room property which used to be Scottish headquarters of the Royal Over-Seas League in Edinburgh, and it’s packed with Scottish pride. Haggis is on the breakfast menu, the ‘do not disturb’ signs are actually sporrans that men wear with kilts, and famous explorers inspired the names for the suites.

Now for the ‘splurge-worthy stays’ – like the sound of a carbon-neutral stay in South Africa’s Soutpansberg mountain range? Few & Far Luvhondo has just six suites (all decorated with local arts and run on solar power) plus a spa and a farm, which grows produce for the restaurant. Oh, and a cable car with an onboard bar – because why not.

Other categories include ‘international flare’, ‘on the water’ and ‘US resorts’ – check them out on Travel + Leisure’s website
