1. A Babysitter's Guide to Monster Hunting (2020)

Best for: Tweens

Kelly Ferguson thought she was signing up for a simple babysitting gig on Halloween night. Well, it turns out she was recruited into a secret society of babysitters who need to be sheltered from wicked monsters. How's that for a scary Halloween? Now, she just has to figure out how to defeat  the Boogeyman known as "The Grand Guignol." Rated PG.

2. Nightbooks (2021)

Best for: Tweens

This dark fantasy film based on the children's book of the same name by JA White follows Alex Mosher, a boy from Brooklyn who loves to write scary stories. After his parents express concern for his mental health, he swears to never write another one before deciding to burn his self-penned collection of scary yarns, which he calls his ‘Night books’. However, after sneaking out of his apartment to destroy his story collections in the apartment building’s furnace, Alex becomes prisoner to a witch who insists that he must write her scary stories or, you know, she’ll kill him. Together with another captive called Yazmin, Alex must figure out how to escape the evil witch’s clutches and return home.

3. Wendell & Wild (2022)

Best for: Teens

Henry Selick, director of The Nightmare Before Christmas, collaborated with Jordan Peele on this radical stop-motion delight about a rebellious teenage girl helping summon two demon brothers into the land of the living. It contains some trippy imagery and big themes, hence the rating, but the world-building is positively sumptuous, and the Afro-punk soundtrack kicks butt. Rated PG-13.

Monster House (2006)
Monster House (2006)

5. The Curse of Bridge Hollow (2022)

Best for: Tweens, teens

Howard hates Halloween – so imagine his chagrin when his own daughter accidentally raises an evil spirit that causes all the holiday decorations in their quaint small town to come to life and wreak havoc. 6. Gnome Alone (2017)

Best for: Big kids

Moving to a new house is not without its challenges, but could you imagine what it would be like if said house is being ambushed by underground beasts? One teen soon finds out that only ones who are able to stop this madness are the gnomes. Talk about an interesting move! Rated PG.

7. Hubie Halloween (2020)

Best for: Tweens, teens

This horror comedy starring Adam Sandler is definitely one for older kids given it contains some crude language, sexual references and jokes not suitable for youngsters, but if you’re in the market for an old school comedy then it delivers. Sandler plays kind hearted Hubie, a local busybody who is the victim of bullying in his hometown of Salem in Massachusetts. As the official Halloween Helper, he is responsible for monitoring the city for any weird goings on during trick or treat season. And with a new suspicious neighbor, an escaped convict on the run and people disappearing mysteriously, Hubie has his hands full this Halloween. Rated PG-13.

8. The Munsters (2022)

Best for: Big kids, tweens

When it came out that Rob Zombie was bringing the silly-spooky ’60s sitcom to the big screen, many may have expected a profane, blood-splattered subversion of the original series. Instead, he keeps it kitschy, and kid-friendly. Want to know how a vivacious vampire and stumbling Frankenstein’s monster got together in the first place? Here’s their origin story. Rated PG.

9. Spookley the Square Pumpkin (2005)

Best for: Little kids

Perfect for your teeny monsters this Halloween, Spookley the Square Pumpkin is a story that's more heartwarming than frightening. He and a few pals learn to accept and embrace his different looks from the other pumpkins in the patch. Rated G.

10. Sharkdog’s Fintastic Halloween (2021)

Best for: Little kids

When a sea monster threatens to upend trick-or-treating plans, who you gonna call? How about Sharkdog and pals? After all, he’s a shark who thinks he’s a dog, which makes him a natural foil to a Halloween-hating underwater creature… or so we assume. In any case, this fun holiday special will get the little’uns into the spirit of the season. Rated TV-Y.

Best for: Little kids

Centaurworld

Netflix’s new fantasy comedy combines Bojack Horseman’s visual humour, theater-kid awkwardness and some truly great musical numbers to tell the weird tale of a horse whisked away to a land of centaurs… and not just the horse kind. There are centaur moles, ficuses, cats (who seem to love Andrew Lloyd Webber, natch) and more in this cacophonously odd tale that should keep adults engaged with its sly humour while kids marvel at the silliness.
